Walker and Clinton Lead Their Parties in the Illinois Primary

A recent poll by Public Policy Polling has put Scott Walker at the top of the Republican Party and Hillary Clinton at the top of the Democrats. In most recent polls, the Republicans have been led by Donald Trump or Jeb Bush, while Clinton has continued to maintain a strong grip on the Democrats.

  • Which Republican candidate would you vote for?
    • Scott Walker – 23%
    • Donald Trump – 18%
    • Jeb Bush – 11%
    • Chris Christie – 8%
    • Ben Carson – 7%
    • Marco Rubio – 6%
    • Mike Huckabee – 5%
    • Rand Paul – 5%
    • Ted Cruz – 4%
  • Which Democrat candidate would you vote for?
    • Hillary Clinton – 60%
    • Bernie Sanders – 23%
    • Martin O’Malley – 4%

In head to head polls, 48 percent of voters chose Clinton over Bush and 42 percent took Sanders over Bush. In a Trump and Clinton matchup, Clinton received 51 percent of the vote to Trump’s 33 percent. Even Sanders edged out Trump with 48 percent of the vote to Trump’s 32 percent. Finally, Walker lost to Clinton and Sanders by a vote of 50 percent to 39 percent and 40 percent to 36 percent.

Historically, Illinois is a state that votes in favor of the Democrats and liberal values. In addition, the majority of the voters—45 percent— in this poll registered as Democrats, while only 25 percent claimed to back the Republicans. Armed with this knowledge, it is not surprising to see the Democrats candidates come out ahead of their Republican counterparts.
