The latest Rasmussen Reports poll is in for the Oregon Governor race between the Democrat John Kitzhaber and his Republican opponent, Dennis Richardson. The poll asked 750 likely voters who they would vote for if an election was to occur today. The margin of error for this poll was 4%. The demographics were as followed: 52% of the voters were male and 48% female. 31% were aged 18-39, 40% were 40-64, 21% were over 65, and 84% of the voters were white. 26% of the voters identified as Republican, 38% as Democrat, and 36% as another party.

Kitzhaber currently holds a strong 10 point lead. He collected 48% of the vote while his opponent only mustered 38%. There is also a rather large portion of voters, 10%, who are undecided. If either candidate can tap into the undecided vote, they could run away with this election. Kitzhaber tends to be more favorable than his opponent. He achieved an approval rating of 53% and a disapproval rating of 39%. Richardson’s approval rating was 31% while his disapproval rating was 27%.

The huge discrepancy in the numbers is due to name recognition. Only 2% of voters haven’t heard of Kitzhaber. However, 30% of voters haven’t heard of Richardson. If he can develop his reputation favorably, he may be able to carve into this large statistic and convert it into positive approval ratings.

In terms of the major issues, 42% of voters trust Kitzhaber to handle government spending, while only 33% trust Richardson. The numbers are largely the same for the issue of taxation and for social issues; Kitzhaber secured 49% of the vote, while his opponent only received 31%. For ethics and corruption, 43% of voters trust Kitzhaber and believe that he is morally correct and apt to make the right choices, while only 30% chose Richardson.
